the so called “TOTAL FOOTBALL”(Ajax-Amsterdam 1970)

the attacking pressure football, “hunt” for the ball (World Cup1974)

Possession

The most important charactaeristic of Ayax’s game is that the team has so much possesion.
Possesion is no longer guarantee of winning, but it has the great advantage that the opposition is forced to do a lot of running after the ball.
By contrast, the Ayax players use much energy, because they can allow the ball to circulate at speed (one or two-touch soccer) and keep their shape(lots of triangles on the field).

Tactics

As far as tactics are concerned,Van Gaal also has his own ideas.
“Many sides play man-to-man marking at hte back, with each defender following his direct opponent as closely as possible.
Ajax nearly always plays a positional zonal marking game*, wich defenders staying in position and picking up an opponent when he comes into their zone.
That only applies during the passive phase ,of course.
In the active phase the obviously follow their man when tha ball is in their vicinity.
I always refer to the Ajax defenders who have to take out the opposition’s strikers as the ‘Killer’.
That is an indications of what I expect of them.

In modern soccer the players in the middle of the back four -the number 3and4 have really become the playmakers. That’s why Blind is, and Rijkaard was, so important to Ajax.
The number10, behind the strikers, certainly can’t be called a playmaker , because the space in whichhe operate is too restricted.

In any case, defenders and defensive midfield players have become much tougther, wiser and faster than in the past.”
